After 45 years of operation, Southern Indiana Scuba’s instructional staff is equipped to teach almost every recreational specialty course available. Our staff has taught via many training agencies over the years, and we are always up-to-date and current in our specialty instruction. We boast the latest equipment and always teach the newest, most reliable techniques.

Diving Knowledge Specialties

 

Enriched Air Nitrox

 

Description: This specialty allows you to purchase and breathe Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN), a mix of breathing gas with a higher concentration of Oxygen than air. This course allows you to use mixes with up to 40% oxygen. When you use Nitrox, you cannot go as deep due to physiology, physics, and partial pressures. You can, however, extend your dive time and find that you are far less fatigued after diving. Often nicknamed “nitrox”, “EAN”, “enriched air”, or “geezer gas”.

Equipment Techniques

 

Description: This specialty is designed to educate you on your own equipment, practical field fixes appropriate to your level as a diver, and help you understand the importance of proper equipment service intervals and maintenance through authorized dealers and technicians. This course is not an equipment repair course, and it is not a substitute for one. The knowledge here is invaluable, as it helps you make better judgments that can ultimately make you a safer diver, as well as a better-educated equipment owner.

React Right

 

Description: In this course, you learn First Aid procedures, use of AED (Automated External Defibrillator), Oxygen (O2) assembly and administration, and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) techniques. This certification is valid for two years. All knowledge in this course is emphasized in a scuba diving context, and is geared toward a diving audience, so you will also learn about diving-related injury and treatments. This course (or an equivalent or higher) is required for one to become a professional diver.

Science of Diving

 

Description: This course will enhance your understanding of the physics of diving, as well as anatomical and physiological dive-related knowledge and science. You will learn gas laws, dive-relevant physics principles and laws. You will develop a greater understanding of why diving-related injuries can occur, and how to prevent them. This course is required to become a professional diver.

Price: $215.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~6-8 hour-long lecture, and all associated processing fees)

Full Face Mask Diving

 

Description: The SSI Full Face Mask Diving program provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to safely dive with a full face mask in environments and to depths in accordance with equipment manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations.

Price: $200.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~2 hour-long lecture, use of any equipment you do not have (besides mask, fins, snorkel, and boots), time in the water with an instructor, and all associated processing fees)

Perfect Buoyancy

 

Description: This class is an involved workshop, designed to give you tips on buoyancy control, weighting, and gear comfort. We strongly recommend you purchase your own Buoyancy Compensation Device (BCD), and take the class if you recently purchased one. Even if you do not own your own BCD, we can still conduct the class, and help you make an educated purchase. This class is a fantastic next step for a newly-certified Open Water Diver, as Perfect Buoyancy can be a tricky skill to master.

Price: $195.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~2 hour-long lecture, use of any equipment you do not have (besides mask, fins, snorkel, and boots), time in the water with an instructor, and all associated processing fees)

Photography and Video

 

Description: This course will help you learn and master the functions on your personal underwater camera. An underwater camera is required for class, and we can help guide you in choosing an underwater camera that suits your needs.

Price: $195.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~2.5 hour-long lecture, use of any equipment you do not have (besides underwater camera, mask, fins, snorkel, and boots), time in the water with an instructor, and all associated processing fees)

Open Water Specialties

 

Boat Diving

 

Description: The SSI Boat Diving program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to safely conduct open water dives from a variety of boats, including small personal craft and liveaboards.

Price: $195.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~1.5 hour-long lecture, use of any equipment you do not have (besides mask, fins, snorkel, and boots), time in the water with an instructor, and all associated processing fees)

Deep Diving

 

Description: The SSI Deep Diving program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to safely conduct open water dives to depths between 60 and 130 feet.

Price: $195.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~2 hour-long lecture, and all associated processing fees)

  • After your lecture, you will conduct at least 2 deep dives with an instructor qualified to teach, evaluate, and certify you as a Deep Diver. You may get these dives done on a trip with us where we dive deeper than 60 feet!

 

Diver Stress and Rescue

 

Description: The SSI Diver Stress & Rescue program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to identify stress, prevent accidents, and manage common emergency situations encountered by recreational divers.

Price: $332.50 (includes the online academic kit, ~3.5 hour-long lecture, time in the pool and open water with an instructor, and all associated processing fees)

  • You must be physically capable of completing the required skills. We will be happy to discuss this with you if you are concerned.
  • You must have proof of current First Aid and CPR training within two (2) years prior to issuing a certification card. Our SSI React Right course counts!
  • After your Stress and Rescue lecture, you can come to a pool session/pool session(s) for your training. You can view the schedule here to see available pool sessions. You must schedule this with us at least two business days in advance.
  • After your pool session(s), you can come to your open water training session, where we will conduct our Diver Stress & Rescue open water workshop. You must schedule this with us at least two business days in advance. You can call, email, or visit us to schedule this session.

 

Navigation

 

Description: The SSI Navigation program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to safely navigate underwater using both natural and compass navigation techniques. We highly recommend you own your own dive computer and/or compass for this course, so you can learn and become comfortable with navigation via your own equipment.

Price: $195.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~2 hour-long lecture, time in the water with an instructor, and all associated processing fees)

Description: The SSI Night and Limited Visibility program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to safely and comfortably dive at night or in limited visibility conditions. We strongly recommend that you own your own dive lights – otherwise, you may have to rent when you go night diving elsewhere.

Price: $195.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~2 hour-long lecture, time in the water with an instructor, and all associated processing fees)

Waves, Tides, and Currents

 

Description: The SSI Waves, Tides and Currents program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to safely dive in a variety of dynamic open water environments. We will have to travel to get this one done.

Price: $160.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~1.5 hour-long lecture, time in the water with an instructor, and all associated processing fees)

Description: The SSI Wreck Diving program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to safely conduct non-penetration dives around wrecks and artificial reefs.

Dedicated Equipment Specialties

 

Dry Suit Diving

 

Description: In this specialty course, you are taught about the usage of dry suits a type of exposure suit that utilizes a dry gas-filled space (usually air or argon) to keep you dry. These suits utilize latex or silicone seals to keep water out, valve systems for inflation and ventilation, and several material types in your suit’s construction to ensure you are comfortable and appropriately equipped for your diving environment. Often, insulated undergarments are worn underneath/inside the dry suit to keep you warm. These suits are quite versatile, as they enable you to explore several new diving environments.

Price: $290.00 (includes the online academic kit, ~1.5 hour-long lecture, all associated processing fees, and a set of drysuit seals, cut for you, that you get to keep)

Independent Diving

 

Description: This specialty caters to the experienced diver. You must have at least 100 logged dives and all of your own equipment, as well as your own solo-diving-specific equipment in order to begin this course. This course will prepare you to dive alone, where allowed. You will be taught proper planning techniques and procedures, as well as how to handle solo inconveniences and emergencies.

Price: $330.00 (includes, ~3 hour-long lecture,all associated processing fees, and all in-water sessions)

Description: Our SSI Search and Recovery specialty will familiarize you with search patterns, knot tying, and lift bags. This is a basic course, and it is meant for fun, not career tactics or techniques. By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of search and recovery efforts.
