Cylinder Hydrostatic Retesting
Definition: a test designed to indicate expansion characteristics and resign from service the cylinders that are on track to catastrophically fail with further use. The test utilizes water pressure to find the permanent expansion of a cylinder, measured in cubic centimeters. To indicate “pass” or “fail”, the operator compares the resultant expansions (elastic and permanent) to the permanent expansion and/or the rejection elastic expansion specified in a cylinder’s special permit or exemption, or foretold in the cylinder’s specification parameters.
Slang: “hydro”, “hydro test”.
Required by DOT in the United States. The interval varies between specifications and special permits. We can show you what your cylinder markings mean.
